David Abel was born in Salt Lake City in November, 1956, and schooled there and in South Florida, Eastern California, the Mid-Hudson Valley, and the Rio Grande Valley. After tenures in New York City and Albuquerque (where he established the Bridge Bookshop, and Passages Bookshop & Gallery, respectively), he relocated to Portland in 1997.
