Abdulhamid, Ammar

Ammar Abdulhamid is a Syrian pro-democracy and human rights activist, who was exiled from the country in 2005 because of his vehement criticism of the Assad regime. He is the founder of the Tharwa Foundation, which played a key role in bringing about the nonviolent pro-democracy protest movement that swept Syria in 2011, leading to a violent crackdown and civil war. He continues his work to promote democracy in Syria and throughout the world from his home in Silver Spring, Maryland, where he lives with his wife and two children.
