Back in Los Angeles, the enigmatic Count de Poenari decides to visit Ian's "pup," Patrick O'Grady, for a "chat." As Rick's friends drive away after boys' night at the Musso & Frank Grill, he is horrified to see the vampire watching him from across the street. While fumbling with his car keys, an arm wraps around his neck and drags Rick into a nearby alley. Later that night in his hotel room, Ian finds a note from Lenore saying she has left New Orleans to handle something unexpected without mentioning it concerns Rick. As he readies for bed, a frantic Noelle Chevalier arrives at his door pleading to speak with him.
