Gibson was a native of the tri-state region and George Lynn Cross Research Professor of History in the University of Oklahoma. He was a well-known western historian and the author of many books, including The Kickapoos: Lords of the Middle Border, The Life and Death of Colonel Albert Jennings Fountain, The Chickasaws, and Oklahoma: A History of Five Centuries.
