Tomy Drier was kidnapped when he was 7 years old. Three years later Tomy manages to escape. Now 10 years old, Tomy finds he is alone in the mountains. Tomy begins a journey to locate his family, relying only on memories. The journey leads him on an unexpected adventure that starts in the West Virginia Mountains, and ends in the hands of Journalist, Jeff King. Tomy meets many characters while he searches, starting with Jack the mountain man. Jack the mountain man finds Tomy very ill and begins nursing him back to health. As a gift, Jack gives Tomy a journal. As soon as Tomy is well enough he starts writing all his adventures in it. One Day his Kidnappers pay an unexpected visit to Jack's log cabin, and claim to be searching for their little cousin who had wandered off into the wilderness. Jack comes up with an idea to outsmart them, he dressing Tomy up like a girl, but though they managed to give them the slip this time, they knew the kidnappers would return. The threat meant it was time for Tomy to be sent away. Jack puts Tomy on a morning train, sending him to a friend's farm. Tomy continues recording all his adventures inside his Journal until the day he is found on the side of the road by Jeff King. Because Tomy wanted his story to be heard, even if he did not survive, he hands the journal to Jeff. Jeff takes Tomy to the local hospital where Tomy is listed as unidentified, and in critical condition. While Tomy continues to fight for his life, Jeff reads the journal searching for answers. Between Tomy's Journal entries, and Jeff's narration, Tomy's adventures come to life. What sort of adventures did Tomy experience? Will he survive? Will Tomy find his family?
