"This superb book clearly displays Annas' characteristic keen sense of what the important philosophical problems are and her willingness to offer bold, new interpretations. ... It is a major contribution both to the novel main question that it develops and to the standing debates that it touches upon. Anyone interested in ancient ethics or political philosophy will learn a great deal from it."
