This qualitative research study explores the experiences of engaging with video diary and video art as means for creative expression in art therapy.
This qualitative research study explores the experiences of engaging with video diary and video art as means for creative expression, with the aim to investigate if these digital methods could be considered as possible tools to be implemented in art therapy for adolescents and young adults (AYA) within the context of psycho-oncology.Theoretical data was collected through literature research to provide a foundational overview of the various areas of art therapy, digital art therapy, and psycho-oncology. Empirical data collection and analysis involved investigating the video diaries made by three AYA living with cancer, with the focus on behaviour and interaction with the digital tools, as well as on the styles and methods of video making. In addition, a self-inquiry and exploration by the researcher about the experiences of interacting with video diary- and video-art making was undertaken. The results indicated that video diary-, and video art-making increased self-awareness and facilitated active engagement, enhancing confident behaviours and a sense of mastery, assisting more effective coping strategies. Furthermore, the findings showed that video diary making functioned mainly as a narrative form of expression, and video art making focused on emotional exploration using aspects of intermedial art expression. This explorative study yields information for further investigation and research on the implementation of video-making as possible therapeutic method within the context of art therapy.
