My ex-best friend was a mass murderer. He didn't shoot up a high school with an assault rifle, but same idea. We grew up together in Wisconsin. His name was Ruth, because his mother wanted a girl and named him after an aunt of hers. Ruth was never any good in school, but later when we got jobs, he turned out to be a computer whiz - which I guess explains his choice of weapon. Besides blues and single malt, Ruth's other big passion was genealogy. He had this theory that if people learned about their history - the culture and traditions that get thrown in the trash when immigrants come over here - there wouldn't be so many crackpots and troubled loners running around the country. Doesn't look like it did Ruth any good, but if it can keep stuff like what he did from happening again, it could be worth thinking about. Anyway, Ruth asked me to get the story told, and since he used to be my best friend - and he's probably still alive out there somewhere - that's what I'm doing.
