How can cultural factors influencing cities and urban culture be made tangible in the context of policy-making and identified in a meaningful analytical framework? This book provides concrete operationalisations for future research. Despite globalisation, cities around the world differ from one another even at the shortest distances. Cultural influences play an important role in this. The three 'corner cases' of Cairo, Chicago and Paris are examined in terms of their cultural differences and their impact on their political organisation. Culturally universal categories are identified that generally constitute cultural factors in the political development of metropolitan regions. Within these categories, cultural influences should be easier to find, group and analyse in the future. This text was submitted in 2012 as a master's thesis at the Friedrich Schiller University in Jena and has been reprinted here in unaltered form.
