What does this p-value actually mean? And what is a significant result? This book provides a compact and comprehension-oriented introduction to inferential statistics and answers questions like these. One focus is on the logic underlying inferential statistics and hypothesis testing: Readers learn the most commonly used procedures (t-test, analysis of variance with and without repeated measures, correlation/regression) as well as the pitfalls of data analysis, and develop the understanding necessary to interpret results correctly. The individual chapters are supplemented by concrete evaluation examples from everyday research - including exemplary implementation with the programs SPSS and R. In addition to the classic methods, cross-references to current developments in psychological methodological research are also included. This book is a translation of the original German 3rdedition ofInferenzstatistik verstehenby Markus Janczyk and Roland Pfister. The translation was done with the help of artificial intelligence (machine translation by the service DeepL.com). A subsequent human revision was done primarily in terms of content, so that the book will read stylistically differently from a conventional translation.

Introduction and descriptive statistics.- Basics of inferential statistics 1: random variables.- Basics of inferential statistics 2: population and parameter estimation.- Hypothesis testing and significance.- Difference hypotheses with a maximum of two groups: t-tests. Confidence intervals.- Error types, effect size and power.- Single factor analysis of variance.- Multifactorial analysis of variance.- Analysis of variance with repeated measures.- Correlation hypotheses: Correlation and regression.- Concluding remarks.

Markus Janczyk studied psychology at the Universities of Halle-Wittenberg and Reno (USA), obtained his doctorate at the TU Dortmund University and habilitated at the Julius-Maximilians-University of Würzburg. He is currently a professor at the University of Bremen, where he heads the Research Methods and Cognitive Psychology Group. In his research, he is primarily interested in action control, multitasking, memory, and cognitive modeling.

Roland Pfister studied psychology at the Julius-Maximilians-University of Würzburg, where he wrote his doctoral thesis on the cognitive mechanisms of conscious rule breaking. In addition, he works on basic mechanisms of action control, the interplay of perception and action, and the history of psychology.
