Ma Chongwei has a doctor's degree in ethnology and is a professor at the School of Ethnology and Sociology of Yunnan University. He is also the executive director of the Chinese Association of Ethnology. He has long been engaged in the development of ethnic society, economy and culture in the southwest frontier ethnic areas and the overseas ethnography research of Southeast Asian countries. He has published more than 90 academic papers in academic journals and 12 treatises on the development of ethnic areas in southwest China. In addition to this book, his main works include Mobile Rubber-Research on the Economic Transactions of Two Hani/Aka People's Villages in the China-Laos Border and On the Edge of the Country: Research on Naduo New Village in Myanmar.
