His thought was deeply rooted in Thomist metaphysics, which he brought into dialogue with the existential phenomenology of his time. Together with his contemporaries, Yves Congar, Karl Rahner and Marie-Dominique Chenu, Schillebeeckx played a key role in the preparations for the theology of the Second Vatican Council.
