The author emphasises that the Trump phenomenon has been building for decades, and the Trump presidency has used significant political, social, economic, and cultural disquiet, and the post-2008 economic crisis and associated global turmoil, to fashion and progress policies which appeal strongly to both the Christian Right and many secular nationalists.

Jeffrey Haynes is Emeritus Professor of Politics at London Metropolitan University, UK. His areas of expertise are religion and international relations, religion and politics, democracy and democratisation, development studies, and comparative politics and globalisation. His publications include more than 50 books, most recently: Peace, Politics, and Religion (ed. 2020), Religion, Conflict and Post-Secular Politics (2020), The Routledge Handbook to Religion and Political Parties (ed. 2020), and From Huntington to Trump: Thirty Years of the Clash of Civilizations (2019).
