Camped near the town of Redemption, Sonny is haunted by visions of people being shot to death and images of a mysterious woman. The other campers tell him a tale of two drifters and the killing spree they went on more than a century ago, suggesting he meet Nora, owner of the general store. Turns out she's the woman in his visions and they feel a strong attraction to each other. She says she's been waiting for him, that they were newlyweds in that other life when two drifters rode into town one day, shot Sonny dead, raped and butchered Nora, and gunned down everyone else they saw. She then shows him photos she's collected of the victims. They look like Sonny, Nora, the campers, and Sonny's ex-wife. After Sonny mentions the strange circumstances surrounding his ex-wife's murder, Nora is convinced the drifters are back.

Soon bodies are piling up, and while Sonny and Nora scramble to learn the drifters' identities, a supernatural conspiracy, steeped in black magic, comes to light, featuring the drifters and their plans to kill everyone there again before implementing the final stage of an ambitious scheme designed to give the drifters the occult powers they've been working so hard to attain each time they've returned to this world. But the specifics remain unclear until a shape-shifting shaman shows up, offering to help Sonny and Nora prepare for the drifters, telling them about a brotherhood of ancient spirits and their cadre of elite warriors who make things gone wrong in this world right. Soon after the shaman explains why Sonny and Nora and the shaman have been sent there to stop the drifters and what their exact roles are, the drifters appear and try to kill Sonny and Nora and several of the campers. When the attempt fails, Sonny and Nora chase after the drifters, following them though a labyrinth of nether realms until the drifters end up turning the tables, trapping them in a mysterious world filled with ugly, dangerous creatures who like to torture and kill, where bad things happen, and Sonny and Nora must battle for their souls.
