National Parks have played a significant role as tourist attractions in many countries since their establishment in the nineteenth century. In some countries they are the major set of tourist attractions and the foundation of small but often important tourism industries. Despite this, the relationship between tourism and national parks is not always a satisfactory one, and there is often considerable and vocal opposition to the continuance, and particularly expansion of, tourism in many national parks. The key focus of this book is the special relationship between national parks and tourism – how national park systems relate to tourism in a variety of contexts – from the historical development through to the role that they play today. International contributions from leading thinkers in the area raise issues such as, park origins and functions, management issues and future problems.
