All metal restorations are strong and tough but, from an esthetic viewpoint, suitable only for posterior restorations. Fortunately the esthetic qualities of ceramic materials can be combined with the strength of metals to produce restorations that have both a natural tooth-like appearance and very good mechanical properties. Nickel-chromium and cobalt-chromium alloys are used in porcelain fused to metal restorations. Titanium and titanium alloys have also been used. It is a more biocompatible material compared to base metal alloys. It is aimed to discuss the principles and steps involved in the tooth preparation for these restorations.
