A baseball short story for young readers. Long since forgotten, the 1925 World Series between the Washington Senators and Pittsburgh Pirates was one of the most exciting ever played. The story revolves around Tom, a black cat from Butler, Pennsylvania, who has been waiting sixteen years for his favorite baseball team, the Pittsburgh Pirates, to return to the World Series. Although black cats are notoriously associated with bad luck, Tom is a certified good luck cat who cannot wait to go to the Butler Radio Shop and listen to the radio broadcasts of the World Series games with other fans of the Pittsburgh Pirates. When Tom arrives at the radio shop to listen to the first World Series game, however, it is discovered that his good luck certification card had expired the day before. Concerned that Tom's presence would jinx the Pirates and help the Washington Senators win the World Series, the crowd refused to let Tom in to listen to the games. Without a radio of his own, Tom had to follow the progress of the World Series by reading the newspaper each day, while hoping that the Washington Senators would not win four games and become World Series Champions before he could get his good luck card renewed. To make matters worse, Washington won three of the first four World Series games, and the Pirates were now one loss away from losing the World Series when Tom arrived at the Department of Good Luck Certification to renew his good luck card. Read along as Tom attempts to overcome adversity and regain his good luck certification in time to help the Pittsburgh Pirates become champions of the baseball world for the first time since 1909.
