With one in five workers (approximately 5 million) reported as having felt under extreme pressure at work, stress is overtaking the common cold as the biggest cause of absence from work. The CBI has put the total cost of mental health and stress problems to employers at u5 billion. The Institute of Management has estimated that 270,000 people take time off very day due to work related stress. This is a cost to the UK economy of u7 billion p.a. in terms of sick pay, lost production, NHS costs, etc. The HSC is planning a programme of work to tackle occupational stress through a range of actions, including the development of standards of good management practice. They concluded that work related stress is a serious problem, it is a health and safety issue, and it can be tackled in part through health and safety legislation. The cost to business of stress related absenteeism and under-performance is known to be huge, and should in itself justify intervention, but if that is not enough, then the cost of losing a stress related claim can run into six figures and attract unwelcome publicity."
