The Tlatilco culture is centred on the site of Tlatilco located in the eastern Sierra de la Cruces in the central Mexican Basin. This detailed study investigates the origins and nature of this culture, asks how and why it developed and what external factors may have affected its evolution. Individual chapters are devoted to settlement evidence, chronology, the nature of society, ceramics, figurines, technology, skeletal evidence, burial and treatment of the dead, music and religion. What the author finds is a rather unique ethnic culture where women played an important role and where social stratification can be seen through the burial evidence. In terms of determining the origins of these people, he also proposes a hypothesis of the migration routes of human populations moving into the central Mexican Basin that contributed to the consolidation of the pre-Classical Tlatilco culture.
