I am Lazaro Jesus Abreu, former Cuban political prisoner (1963-1972). I served nine years behind the sullen walls of the Fortress La Cabana, the San Severino Castle, the National Prison of Isla de Pinos, the Political Prison of Puerto Boniato, and many others. Every time I stop to think about the poor conditions of those insufferable hellish places, about the sub-humane day to day living circumstances prisoners have to endure, I realize the resilience and indomitable spirit of thousands of my brothers who spent fifteen, twenty, twenty-five, thirty and even more years of confinement without ever receiving the slightest bit of support, respect and/or consideration for their bravery. There is much sorrow in my soul, and I think about the future ones who will represent the ideals of freedom and order with sadness. The greatest thing about an ideal is not to achieve it but to give everything in its name The main purpose of this book is to show the readers that peace and justice's worst enemy is the ignorance of our history. One should stop and ponder at every crossroad in humanity's co-existence, just so we don't turn into the puppets of the manipulators and politicians in office at the moment.
