The text aims to encourage students to think around and behind any text they translate, to be aware of the discourse of the text against the background of related texts and related discourses in the source and target language. The focus is not only on the vocabulary and linguistic structures needed for a text, but also the way things work at a manual or visual level.

Taking the text as the stimulus which triggers the translator’s schema, Pellatt looks at ways of building schemata starting from the simplest texts, to more complex texts, and covering a range of subject matter, from cultural issues, legal contracts to financial markets.
