The purpose of this research is to analyze the value created within the private equity and venture capital industries across different dimensions. Exits of Venture capital and Private equity-backed companies are the key to apprehending the growth and ultimate success of a network or ecosystem. Two types of data are collected to perform an analysis of the value created within the private equity and venture capital industries. Exit valuations are needed to measure the amount of value created in an absolute term while the amount of fund raised is needed to calculate the Exit-to-funding ratio, designed as the value creation ratio, to quantify the value created in a relative term. The thesis starts with important overviews of the most important markets within the private equity and the venture capital industries then goes on to present the findings of the exit analysis. It was difficult to draw meaningful conclusions about the value created within the venture capital and private equity industries for two main reasons: data availability and data collection problems as well as the difficulty to capture both behavioral and psychological treats of the people within the industry.
