While the struggle for freedom from oppression and misery is probably as old as humanity itself, it was the enormity of the affront to human dignity during that war, and the need to prevent such horrors from happening again, that led to a renewed focus on the human being and resulted in the codification of human rights and fundamental freedoms at the international level. 3. The Congolese prison system faces a number of problems, including poor conditions of detention (lack of food, medical care, bedding, accommodation, etc.), dilapidated prison infrastructure, lack of separation of inmates, and prison escapes.
