Turkey, being an EU candidate country since 1999, isin the process of transforming its OccupationalHealth and Safety (OH&S) governance in accordancewith the EUs expectations thus changing itslegislation and reconstructing its institutionalcapacity. Having negative experiences in terms ofhigh numbers of occupational accidents and diseasesdespite its extensive OH&S legislation and thelong-established institutions to implement it, thenew governance of OH&S in Turkey introduced adifferent perspective, which tends to transform itsubstantially. However, supremacy of the economicagenda to the social policy as a distinctivecharacteristic of candidacy process is challengingthe new OH&S governance in Turkey. This study, therefore, explores the new governance of OH&S duringTurkeys EU candidacy by building on the stance ofsocial policy and OH&S in the EU with a particularemphasis on the new member states.
