In this contribution, the author investigates the relationship between the United Nations Convention on Contracts for the International Sale of Goods (CISG or Vienna Sales Convention) and private international law. Through an in-depth analysis of articles 1,6,7,28 and 95 of the CISG, it is illustrated that a symbiotic relationship exists between the Vienna Sales Convention - a uniform international substantive law convention - and the rules of private international law. Due to its large number of contracting states from jurisdictions representative of all legal traditions, the CISG has been heralded as one of the most successful international conventions in the field of international sales law. An exposition of the CISGs relationship with private international law and domestic sales law is of special relevance for the international business and legal community.

Marlene Wethmar-Lemmer holds the BCom (Law); LLB; and MA (Latin) degrees from the University of Pretoria; and an LLM (International Commercial Law) as well as an LLD degree in Private International Law obtained from the University of Johannesburg. She is an associate professor in Private International Law at the University of South Africa.
