Can there be any doubt that this is the most perilous period in human history? Through our ignorance and self-indulgence, our judgmentalness and fear, we have opened the door in our personal and collective lives to malevolent forces of polarization and conflict. On 9/11, in an apocalyptic scene, darkness descended and was utilized by those who, in their drive for power and dominance, are holding humanity hostage. With that, the belief in Armageddon as a mere myth was shattered. Today, we are standing in its very shadow. This is because lack of awareness and semi-conscious living have led us to march blindly toward a very steep cliff, with the possibility of a fall into a gorge that has the potential to become a gruesome planetary grave. The last one hundred years in particular have been a checkered history of contrasts and dichotomies: dreams of liberation amid brutal dictatorships, improved living standards amid an environmentally ravaged Earth, growing materialism amid spiritual hunger, the collapse of the old and familiar, the shaking of structures, of lives. We have been rattled by wars, revolutions, concentration camps, gulags, atom bombs, human rights abuses, financial meltdowns, economic hardships, environmental abuses, terror and torture. And we have been directed into more inclusive, unified thinking by Quantum physics, Eastern spirituality, Western holistic thought, the World Wide Web, our own con-science. All these remind us that there are concepts that need to be erased and behaviors that must expire if humanity is to live. Above all, our primary allegiance must shift from tribe or nation to humanity as a whole, knowing that once the heart is anchored there, we cannot but be humane toward people everywhere. Such a change of consciousness could make barriers that have kept us separated from one another disintegrate, and allow us to reap together the blessings of shared life. Daily news from around the globe indicates that we have indeed reached a turning point in our evolution whereby we cannot remain in the same contorted, subservient posture we have maintained for so long. Too much is at stake for any of us to be indifferent or aloof. That's why to help tip the scales in favor of sanity, everyone who cares needs to make his or her position known - be that in private or public. We cannot afford to remain voiceless any longer, for truth demands to be spoken. This applies especially to the Middle East, where silent acquiescence has placed the fate of the world at risk. The situation would be sufficiently disturbing under "normal" circumstances; however, there is nothing normal about the configuration in the region that finds Israel clamoring for a preemptive strike on Iran, allegedly for its nuclear weapons program. Should such an unwarranted assault occur, it could set off the greatest calamity the world has ever experienced. For not only could it ignite World War III, but spark what in biblical terms is called Armageddon, the great war of all against all - a nuclear holocaust beyond comprehension. In order to save the world from such a catastrophe, Americans must boldly reclaim their constitutional principles and humanitarian values. Grave injustices have herded humankind toward an abyss that compels us to choose. Will it be Armageddon and death, or awakening to Life's Oneness, that delineates our future? The signs are clear for those willing to see and listen. On one side are more than 20,000 nuclear warheads and the will to use them; on the other side stands humanity poised at the cusp of a new creation, and subject to the greatest test ever. To prevent an unimaginable catastrophe requires a critical mass of awakened human beings serving truth and justice. Only then will peace no longer elude us.
