The largest of the 80 families of red algae is theRhodomelaceae. A great many genera and species arerestricted to Australasia, which is the major centreof diversity and distribution. Perhaps as aconsequence, the Rhodomelaceae has remainedrelatively unstudied compared with most other redalgal families even at the morphological/ anatomicallevel. This work studies selected tribes and genera, all of which have a strong Australasian component.Anatomical and molecular analyses have beenundertaken on members of the tribes Amansieae,Pleurostichidieae, Streblocladieae and Sonderelleae. The results of these analyses have led to thedescription of two new genera, three new species, andone new tribe as well as the resurrection of twogenera and the recombination of ten species. Thetaxonomic position and validity of the studied tribesand genera has also been established. This study willbe of particular interest to taxonomic phycologistsor anyone else interested in the marine botany of theAustralasian region.
