Born 1946; trained at the Jewish Theological Seminary and Columbia University before earning his doctoral degree at the Jewish Theological Seminary of America; has taught at Ben Gurion University of the Negev, the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Bar-Ilan University, Yale, Harvard, and Yeshiva University; since 1990 holds Hermann P and Sophia Taubman Chair of Talmudic Culture at the University of California at Berkeley; 2016/17 fellowships at the Max Weber Kolleg in Erfurt and an Alexander von Humboldt senior fellowship at the Institute for Catholic Studies at the Freie Universität Berlin. is the director of the Paris Yiddish Center - Medem Library (Maison de la culture yiddish - Bibliothèque Medem).
