The Holy Spirit is the third person of the Holy Trinity. Jesus introduces him to us in his final hours by saying that he "the Spirit of truth will guide us to all truth." He is the spirit of truth because he is One with the Father and the Son in infinite and eternal Majesty. He is the Spirit of truth because God is absolute truth and the Holy Spirit is one of the three persons of God sharing the identical divine nature with the Father and the Son. He will lead us to the truth because he is love and love always does the loving thing for the beloved, which are the children of God redeemed by Christ' passion, death and resurrection. The Holy Spirit is closer to your soul and body than you are to yourself. The Holy Spirit was with us when we were knit together in our Mother's womb. (Ps. 139:13) The Holy Spirit was with us when we first came into existence "before the foundation of the world," as part of his plan for creation. (Eph. 1:4) The Holy Spirit guides us toward virtue and away from sin, deception and evil. The Old Testament writers tell us the "holy spirit of discipline flees deceit and withdraws from senseless counsels and is rebuked when unrighteousness occurs. (Wis. 1:5)
