Madeleine Arnot is Professor of Sociology of Education at Cambridge University, UK, and Professorial Fellow at Jesus College. She is a Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences and Chair of the Executive Editorial Board of the British Journal of Sociology of Education. Recent publications include Education, Asylum and the ‘Non-citizen’ child: The politics of compassion (2008, with H. Pinson and M.
