International companies involved in hydrocarbon prospecting have been in Mozambique since 2010 and have since announced major natural gas discoveries. These discoveries have come as a major chance for the Mozambican government to increase its economic performance, advance its infrastructural development and improve the livelihoods of its population. It has been observed that not all countries that were fortunate to be blessed with natural resources were able to translate this endowment into socio-economic development. Mozambique has great pressures to develop structures to govern its natural gas industry so as to enable the country and its population to maximize the opportunities to be presented by the hydrocarbon industry and to fend off the inherent threats. The country has to understand the aspect of the 'resource curse' and implement measures to ensure that the natural gas discovery benefits the country and not the contrary. This study was conducted to analyze the effects that the natural gas discovery and commercialization can have in Mozambique and to assess how it can help to improve the current socio-economic state of one of the poorest countries in the world.
