Critically examines the growth of the social economy and the issues of work, labour, employment and social reproduction, both historically and theoretically, in an era of intensifying globalization.
This book critically examines the growth of the social economy and the issues of work, labour, employment and social reproduction, both historically and theoretically, in an era of intensifying globalization.
The author argues that the significance of the social economy lies in its challenge to orthodox development strategies predicated on neo-classical and Keynesian economics. Specifically, the challenge is to the metonymic understanding of economy as solely constitutive of the capitalist market economy and labour as delimited solely to employment/paid work. By reclaiming labour from the confines of employment to the broader conceptualization of multi-active work, the social economy acts as a potential site of transition within the global political economy where the paradigm of employment shifts to something broader.
The book provides an assessment of the work done in and through the social economy, and provides a detailed case study on Canada. The developmental question is no longer how is it possible to generate employment, but how is it possible to ensure the (re)production of labour-power? This question broadens the analysis from that of employment generation to the establishment, contestation and transformation of world orders.
This book will be of interest to students and scholars of international political economy, labour, sociology and globalization studies.
