Preface Preface to the English edition This book on the Science of Construction Materials is the English version of the Danish textbook Materialefysik for Bygningsingeniorer (Statens Byggefor- ningsinstitut - Danish Building Research Institute, Horsholm, 1995). The tra- lation has been done by a team consisting of Professor Ole Mejlhede Jensen, Technical University of Denmark and Kirsten Aakjaer, BA, Aalborg University. Comments on the English version were kindly supplied by Professor Sidney D- mond, PurdueUniversity.Helpwithreproductionoftheline?gureswasgivenby Trine Bay, MSc student, and help with the ?nal text editing was given by Sara Laustsen, PhD student. Transfer of copyright was kindly granted by the family of Per Freiesleben Hansen. Financial support for the translation was donated by three Danish foundations: COWIfonden, Knud Hojgaards fond, and Larsen & Nielsen fonden. A number of modi?cations were made during the preparation of the English version of the textbook. Some of these have been necessitated by the translation, suchasreferencestosourcesinDanishbeingchangedtointernationalreferences. Other corrections were made concerning a few apparent errors in the text. All line ?gures have been redrawn, and many photos have been substituted. H- ever, in general, the English version is close to the Danish text. In addition to the textbook, a separate book of exercises exists. The exercises di?er in extent and complexity and are organized to further the understanding and use of the subjects in the textbook. Based on this teaching concept, the subject of ba- Per Freiesleben Hansen sic construction materials has been taught successfully in Denmark through 20 (1936-2002) years."

From the reviews: "Many of the aspects of the deterioration of concrete infrastructure, such as corrosion of reinforcing steel, cannot be addressed until the underlying physics and chemistry are clearly understood. The textbook, Science of Construction Materials, is the first one in English that synthesizes various materials science issues, which are the foundation of our recent advances in infrastructure materials.  An unusual and critically important aspect of the textbook is that it includes not only detailed concepts of thermodynamics and electrochemistry but also lays a mathematical foundation of computational models, which are necessary to tackle complex interactions between chemistry and mechanics. This book fills a much-needed gap in the scant literature available to students and researchers trying to learn the science of infrastructure materials."
Surendra P. Shah, Walter P. Murphy Professor of Civil Engineering, Director of the Center for Advanced Cement Based Materials, Northwestern University "This well-written and -illustrated book, authored by the late Freiesleben Hansen and edited by Mejlhede Jensen ... reviews the thermodynamic, kinetic, and electrochemical concepts that are applied to the solution of problems pertinent to construction materials. ... The work ends with solutions to questions and exercises, and a detailed subject index. Literature in this area is rather scant, so the book will be very beneficial to civil engineering students, researchers, and practicing engineers. ... Summing Up: Recommended. Upper-division undergraduate through professional libraries." (T. Z. Kattamis, Choice, Vol. 47 (10), June, 2010)

Systems of matter.- Thermodynamic concepts.- First law.- Second law.- Calculations of equilibrium.- Electrochemistry.- Mathematical appendix.- Tables.- Solutions to check-up questions and exercises.

Ole Mejlhede Jensen is Professor of Construction Materials in the Department of Civil Engineering, Technical University of Denmark. He has worked close together with the late Professor Per Freiesleben Hansen for 15 years. Ole Mejlhede Jensen is presently chairman of the Technical Activities Committee and the Educational Activities Committee of RILEM.

The Science of Construction Materials is a study and work book for civil engineering students. Since the contents of the book are presented in a way that makes the reading an active process, the book is also suitable as self-study for the researcher and practising civil engineer. The publication is not a textbook on thermodynamics, but rather an incentive to use the calculation methods of physical chemistry to solve problems within the science of construction materials. The presentation of the theoretical subjects is supported by approximately 500 exercises with solutions as well as commented examples of calculations; throughout the book the relation to civil engineering practice is demonstrated. A detailed subject index and a comprehensive collection of tables of physical and chemical data for substances relevant for the science of construction materials are also found in the book. This makes the book suitable as a work of reference.
