I later discovered that the history of the place I had stayed could have explained all sorts of happenings. Of course history is full of impossible love stories but could there be one more impossible than this and therefore more heart-rending? Cuba: The Falcon and the Fortune-Teller arose from a balmy evening of the dazzling music for which the island is famous. Sitting with friends in the square by the majestic cathedral my eye was caught by a remarkable black woman in white dress and turban smoking a huge cigar. She was a santeras, a fortune-teller and a remarkable one. Was she foretelling my future or, strangely, my long-distant past?
