"The Routledge Companion to Britain in the 19th Century" is a compendium of facts and figures on British political, social, religious, economic and imperial history from the defeat of Napoleon to the beginning of the First World War. It is made up of lists, chronologies and biographies. It is the place to go to find out everything from the nuts and bolts of electoral reform and who held which cabinet position throughout the period, to key dates in the history of trades unions and to important moments in the development of sport and leisure, such as when the FA Cup was established, when the Wimbledon Championship began and when the Queensbury Rules were introduced to boxing (1871, 1877 and 1866 respectively). It will become an essential reference resource for all those studying the period.
For the new edition, the leisure and sport section will expand, and Chris will also include material on some themes that have emerged more recently - travel, masculinity, Englishness.

O autorze

Chris Cook was Head of the Modern Archives Unit at the London School of Economics and is co-author (with John Stevenson) of The Routledge Companion to European History since 1763 and The Routledge Companion to World History since 1914.  A Fellow of the Royal Historical Society he is also author of European Political Facts of the Twentieth Century and the best-selling Pears Cyclopedia.  He is currently compiling British Political Archives since the Second World War.
