Seinen Ruhm als Autor begründete der Band 'Der klassische Stil: Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven', für den er 1972 den National Book Award for Arts and Letters erhielt und der ein Welterfolg wurde. 'Musik der Romantik' ist sein zweites Buch. Rosen lebt als emeritierter Professor in New York und Paris, reist als Pianist und Vortragender durch die ganze Welt. Er wurde zuletzt 1998 mit dem Truman Capote Award for Literary Criticism ausgezeichnet.
