Erik Schmidt's (b. Herford, 1968; lives and works in Berlin) art revolves around observations of symbolic processes within various subsystems of society. He is especially interested in cliche s, stereotypes, codes, rituals, norms, patterns, conventions, and roles. He uses his own photographs as a basis for his drawings and paintings. Using thick brushstrokes and spatula marks, he paints over cityscapes, portraits and natural scenes in layers of oil paint several centimetres deep. In his videos, he often appears as a character himself-sometimes serious, sometimes with ironic detachment- questioning ideas of identity, sexuality, and gender.  Published on occasion of the artist's survey exhibition at the KINDL-Centre for Contemporary Art, the catalogue The Rise and Fall of Erik Schmidt brings together views of Berlin as well as works created during his travels, performative role-plays, and more recent pieces. With a foreword by Kathrin Becker and essays by Krist Gruijthuijsen, Louisa Elderton, and the exhibition's curator, Yara Sonseca Mas. Die Fiktion des Selbst          Erik Schmidt (geb. 1968 in Herford; lebt und arbeitet in Berlin) geht es in seinem Werk um die Beobachtung symbolischer Prozesse innerhalb verschiedener gesellschaftlicher Subsysteme. Klischees, Stereotype, Codes, Rituale, Normen, Muster, Konventionen und Rollen interessieren ihn besonders. Für seine Zeichnungen und Malereien nutzt er als Grundlage selbst aufgenommene Fotografien. Er übermalt Stadtlandschaften, Portrats und Naturszenen mit Pinsel- und Spachtelspuren aus zentimeterdicker Olfarbe. In seinen Videos setzt er sich selbst oft als Figur ins Bild. Mal ernsthaft, mal ironisch gebrochen hinterfragt er die Vorstellungen von Identitat, Sexualitat und Geschlecht.          Der Katalog The Rise and Fall of Erik Schmidt, der anlasslich der Uberblicksausstellung des Künstlers im KINDL - Zentrum für zeitgenossische Kunst erscheint, versammelt neben Berliner Stadtansichten auch solche, die auf Reisen entstanden sind, performative Rollenspiele und jüngere Arbeiten. Dabei wird sichtbar, wie sehr Schmidts Werk vom Wechselspiel zwischen Dokumentation und Fiktion gepragt ist. Mit einem Vorwort von Kathrin Becker und Essays von Krist Gruijthuijsen, Louisa Elderton und der Kuratorin der Ausstellung Yara Sonseca Mas.
