Each of them [Matthew Locke, Benjamin Rogers and Michael Wise], writing within the limitations of the restored church's musical capabilities, produced fresh, clean music in syllabic text settings, communicating the English language clearly, directly, and at times, affectingly. As such, a picture is painted of a time in English music, perhaps (Purcell excepted) less glorious than some, but full of unpretentious, pleasurable achievement. The editions are scholarly, the layout exemplary, the introductory notes, which include some discussion of performance practice, helpful and informative.
