Leaders actions can have consequences opposite to those they intended. These unintentional results are difficult to detect, understand, and change. Consequently, leaders' actions tend to persist resulting in further unexpected outcomes and so on. This can create a vicious cycle of leadership failure. This book describes seven leadership paradoxes that are inherent in running today's complex and changing organizations. They represent the fundamental issues that modern leaders must recognize and deal with effectively to succeed. The Protean Leader: Leading in Uncertain Times: The Power of Paradox identifies specific right actions that leaders need to take to address each paradox successfully as well as particular leadership capabilities underlying those behaviors. The seven paradoxes and their corresponding leadership actions and capabilities were first distilled from the author's extensive experience working with leaders across a variety of business and public organizations. They were then validated and refined through in-depth interviews with 20 experienced leaders from diverse organizations and backgrounds--both men and women, young and old, from profit and non-profit organizations, from domestic and international firms.
