This book offers a novel approach to studying the political impact of refugees. It centres on the political incentives and reactions that arise in countries from hosting refugees. The first book to study protests by refugees and camp militarization in order to explain military intervention undertaken by neighboring countries, it focuses on two broad implications of refugee hosting: (1) the proclivity towards protests and refugee camp militarization in the host country; and (2) the likelihood that the host country will intervene militarily in the refugee sending neighboring country.
The author shows that the two concepts are related: it is often the existence of rebel bases among refugee camps that induces the host country to consider military intervention. She argues that the refugee burden itself can induce military intervention by the host. Also, it is in the host country s interest to encourage another entity to intervene in the refugee sending country, but in the absence of a third party intervention, the host country is likely to intervene on its own.
The findings put forward provide the basis to understand the conditions under which violence can break out, and they have implications for host countries, donor countries, and aid organizations in the formulation of refugee policy. The book will be of interest to scholars in the fields of South Asian studies, comparative politics, international relations, refugee studies, development studies, security studies and peace studies.
