Georg Simmel (1858 - 1918), Philosoph und Soziologe. Promotion und Habilitation in Berlin, ab 1914 Professur in Straßburg. Einer der bedeutendsten Begründer der Soziologie als eigenständige, auf dem Zusammenspiel von Theorie und Empirie beruhende Wissenschaft. Er war Mitbegründer der formalen Soziologie und schaffte durch seine vielfältigen Forschungsinteressen Grundlagen für Spezialsoziologien (u.a. Konflikt- und Stadtsoziologie). 1909 begründete er zusammen mit Max Weber, Ferdinand Tönnies und Werner Sombart die Deutsche Gesellschaft für Soziologie (DGS). Simmel war außerdem Mitherausgeber der 1910 gegründeten Zeitschrift "Logos. Internationale Zeitschrift für Philosophie der Kultur".
