This chapter builds upon chapter 1 and moves into goal setting. The reader will explore concepts associated with goal setting which will include the assessment of one’s present career and future career plans. The elements of a well-constructed goal will be described. The self-discipline needed to achieve goals will be incorporated along with the concepts associated with self-discipline. Strategies for goal setting and self-discipline will be incorporated throughout the chapter. Through suggested activities provided, the reader will work through setting goals and managing self-discipline. Sample vignettes depicting example goal setting and self discipline will be included.

Through suggested activities provided throughout the chapter, the reader will explore what strategies they plan to use to build their career path in professional nursing practice. This chapter will describe the various types of academic career paths. Dr. Jennifer M. Manning, Associate Dean for Undergraduate Programs at Louisiana State University Health Science Center School of Nursing, has 20 years of nursing experience and twelve years of advanced practice registered nurse experience. She served as the Director of the RN-BSN program from 2012-2015 and the Traditional BSN program in 2015. Dr. Manning is actively involved in recruitment, progression, retention, and graduation of undergraduate nursing student initiatives. She has taught at the undergraduate, masters, practice doctorate, and research-focused doctorate level. She has mentored nursing students, nursing faculty, and registered nurses. She has published multiple book chapters and many scholarly manuscripts. She reviews for journals and publishers. Her research interests include nursing education, nurse work environments, and nursing leadership.
