It is 1962 and the height of the Cold war tensions between East and West, when a well planned Soviet conspiracy is uncovered by Polly Bottomley an MP and an expert in Soviet Affairs. Initiated by the actions of the European Nations, a retaliatory course set by Russia with the aim to instigate a global conflict seems all but inevitable - only nobody knows what form this counter attack will take. Have the Europeans give them the perfect excuse to initiate a nuclear strike against the U.S. while seemingly protecting themselves from the possibility of future European retaliation in the process. To the world at large the Soviets appear to have the perfect excuse to protect themselves and so create a third world war. But Polly Bottomley, catches wind of the impending uprising thanks to her contacts in the Foreign Office. Unlike her action-oriented peers however, she believes that the Russians can be brought to heel using diplomacy to point out the failings of their ideology. Despite her best efforts at a peace conference she chairs in Moscow, the Soviets continue their intrusion into Europe. She believes the European Nations should opt for a united front against them and delivers a tough ultimatum to them in a speech from the United Nations in New York. Her husband Daniel, an MI6 operative, sees the Russian threat from a completely different perspective, believing that they'll look to attack the US at the first opportunity. Then, he is contacted by the Americans concerned that Russian sleeper cells may be operating in Britain hoping to infiltrate government. What he and Polly uncover is a frightening almost terrifying scenario being hatched by the Soviets, brilliant in concept but with the prospects of the inevitable conclusion, namely an all out nuclear conflict between East and West. Can Daniel and Polly determine if there is a connection between the Russian sleeper cells and the European National Party? What are the Soviets actually planning that will threaten world peace? And will Daniel be able to rescue Polly before she is disposed of when the Soviets abduct her? Will the Russian agent, who so tormented and abused her ten years ago finally get his way before she is disposed of by Soviet agents? With the Soviet threat heading towards the point of no return and espionage infiltrating every element of international affairs, it's do or die for Daniel and Polly as they attempt to contain the simmering global turmoil. But can they pull it off without losing themselves in the process? Will their love and devotion for each other finally prevail as the Soviets try to dispose of them once and for always? The gritty fast paced action with adult content mirrors perfectly the events of the time . Following on from The Secret's Container and The Traffic Light Syndrome, The Octopus Virus is the conclusion to the author's high concept trilogy dominated by the cold war that existed in the 50's and 60's.
