The historian Khvandmir (d. 1534-5) came from an educated family of Herat. As a young man he received encouragement and patronage from the cultivated Amir and administrator, 'Alishir Nava'i, famous also as a great Catagay poet. The Makarim al-Akhlaq, a panegyric biography, was incomplete at Navai's death in 1501 and was dedicated to the Timurid King, Sultan Husain Mirza. It contains sections on its subject's life, literary and charitable works, and noble qualities, amongst other things. Written in the style favoured by Khvandmir, it contains information on the social life of the period. The edition reproduces the 16th-century MS in the British Library.
