When Senator John Glenn and his wife Annie campaigned in the Stetzel's home town in Ohio, Bernadine created a painting of this event and eventually presented it to the Glenns. The Senator and Annie not only became fans of her work, but a lasting friendship was born between them. Bernadine greatly admired both the Glenns. In particular she was inspired by Annie's personal challenges in overcoming her long-time stuttering, which compelled her to write "The Little Girl Who Stuttered" in hopes of sharing Annie's story with countless others who were facing challenges of their own.
