Many of his lithographs are autobiographical; reflecting his loves, interests, concerns, background, and hopes. Taylor began his study of lithography in 1931 at the Art Students League in New York City. Taylor's first lithograph was Negro Head, composed in 1931. His last composition was Church at Trampass, composed in 1983. In his 52 years as a lithographer, Taylor created 137 lithographs - many of which follow the parameters of realism. Taylor was involved in and influenced by the Harlem Renaissance and collaborated with Langston Hughes, illustrating the poet's volume: The Scottsboro Poems.
