The film is inspired, in part, by the histories and personalities - the editors and writers - of publications such as the Paris Review, the New York Review of Books and, especially, the New Yorker. Janet Flanner: "My master was the New Yorker. A strict master. [Editor Harold] Ross... was a madman, thank goodness. I had very good fortune in working for a lunatic like Ross; he kept us all distracted and completely on our toes, completely aware, completely awake... He would chase words around in the air in the atmosphere of the office until they were almost visible in their entity." In addition to the screenplay, this volume also contains a gallery of images from the film.
