Despite extensive excavation over several centuries our knowledge of the Middle Assyrian period has continued to be sparse, largely because of the impossibility of undertaking excavations in an area which has been continually occupied up to the present day. In 1963 therefore it was decided that more information would be gained by excavating in the less settled areas outside the Tigris valley and Tell al Rimah, which lies south of Tell Afar. It was chosen as a site which would yield material which would flesh out the bones of second millennium history and archaeology in Assyria. This volume is devoted to the publication of the pottery from these excavations with a commentary on the stratigraphy of the site.
