This volume surveys developing country experiences with industrialization over the last fifty years and in this constitutes a successor text to the author’s previous influential contributions on the subject. It does, however, differ in a number of ways in that less emphasis is now placed approach on the theory of  industrialisation and more on contemporary issues. These include:

- the spread of global production networks,

- aspects of international trade including the role of the World Trade Organization, free trade areas and market access

- technology transfer, and the rise of China and India amongst other countries

The book contains original data analysis on changes in industrial structure and the role of industry in growth. These changes are surveyed both at the macroeconomic level as well as the microeconomic, with studies of small scale firms and entrepreneurship.

The book is suitable for both undergraduate and graduate level courses, but will also be invaluable to professionals working in development.

John Weiss  is Professor of Development Economics and Associate Dean for Research in the Bradford Centre for International Development, the University of Bradford, UK. He has worked as a consultant for many international organisations including the Asian Development Bank, the World Bank and the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation.
