This printed book (paperback) contains part of the voluminous work-related private correspondence sent to Sir Ernest Satow while he was Her Britannic Majesty's Envoy Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary in Japan (1895-1900) from the Satow Papers (ref. PRO 30/33) held at The National Archives, Kew, London, transcribed and published in full from handwritten originals with annotations for the use of scholars and researchers. Some of the letters are from superiors at the Foreign Office and some from the Office of Works about buildings, but most are from subordinates (Tokyo legation staff and consular staff). A very few replies from Satow himself are included. This book offers a rare glimpse at hitherto unpublished material. 571 pages. 452 footnotes. Two illustrations.
